Nueces River

Out of all the Western Hill Country rivers, the Nueces River is probably my favorite for clear water fishing. The water here is ultra-clear, arguably the clearest water in the state. I have fished this river from just above Camp Wood down past Uvalde. There are plenty of crossings on the Nueces, and the people are quite friendly. This river is abundant with fish, and a 100 fish day is not uncommon. While the bass can be on the smaller side, 2-5 pounders are common in the deeper pools or in the backwaters of the many seasonal creeks that flow into the river. Among all the Western Hill Country rivers, the Nueces would be the most raftable. I first fished this river while dating my future wife during the Bud Priddy One Fly Tournament around 1999. I have been in love with this river ever since.
